Composite veneers and porcelain veneers are both great options to enhance your smile. Let’s find out more about getting veneers in the Melbourne area.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin coverings shaped exactly to your teeth and permanently bonded on top of them to enhance your smile. They can hide all sorts of imperfections such as chips, gaps and stains, especially stains that don’t shift after tooth whitening. They are considered a less drastic solution than crowns. They also protect teeth from further damage.

Veneers can be made of composite or porcelain.

About composite veneers

Composite veneers are regarded as the low-hassle way to dramatically improve the appearance of your smile.

For a start, composite veneers cost less than porcelain veneers. They require less labor than porcelain veneers and, in fact, can be fitted in a single appointment. They are also easier to repair.

The drawback to composite veneers is that they don’t last as long as porcelain veneers, and they tend to break down more easily. They are also more likely to stain. For these reasons, dentists may suggest composite veneers as a temporary measure and recommend porcelain veneers for a more lasting result.

About porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are considered to be very lifelike and to be a great match to your natural teeth.

They are very durable and don’t break easily. They are also stain-resistant.

Porcelain veneers cost is likely to be more than that of composite veneers.

What should I expect at my veneers appointments?

You will have two appointments to fit your veneers whether you opt for the composite or porcelain variety.

At the first appointment, your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth to make room for your veneers. An impression will then be taken of your prepared teeth and sent to the lab so they can make your personalised set of veneers. You may be fitted with a temporary plastic veneer to see you through till your next appointment.

Your second appointment will take place two weeks later. Your dentist will ensure that the veneers prepared for you are a good match and fit. They will then prepare your teeth by cleaning, polishing and roughening them and finally fit the veneers to your teeth.
